Red Flames' Euro 2025 hopes threatened after second defeat
Belgium's women's football team have lost their first two matches in the Euro 2025 qualifiers, putting their chances of qualifying for the tournament in jeopardy. After losing 7-0 to world champions Spain on Friday, the Red Flames lost 4-2 to Denmark in Viborg on Tuesday night.
After Friday's humiliating defeat, the Belgians were determined to bounce back. However, Denmark quickly took the lead and were 3-0 up at the break. The Red Flames staged a late comeback with two goals, but that wasn't enough to secure their first points of the qualifiers.
The heavy losses are a far cry from the end of last year, when the team produced world-class performances to beat the Netherlands and European champions England in the Nations League.
Fourth place
The two recent defeats leave Belgium bottom of Group A2 with 0 points and a goal difference of -9. Only the two top two teams in each group qualify directly for the European Championship, while the third and fourth teams will have to go through the play-offs to secure a place in the tournament.
Finishing fourth also means relegation, which will make it harder to qualify for tournaments in the future. To avoid this scenario, Belgium will need to pull out all the stops in their next two matches against Czechia, away on 31 May and at home on 4 June.
