Revamp of Saint-Gilles square to improve environment for locals following gun violence

The Brussels municipality of Saint-Gilles has been granted a licence to redevelop Square Jacques Franck, following a number of shootings in the area last year.
The area, close to Midi station, has regularly been in the news for drug-related crimes. In an attempt to make it more pleasant for locals, Saint-Gilles is investing in the public space.
“The Brussels Midi district has a lot of challenges … but quality public space makes residents appreciate and reappropriate their city more,” said Brussels state secretary Ans Persoons, of Flemish socialists Vooruit.
Sustainable neighbourhood
“This project ensures that this part of the Midi district becomes more pleasant for young and old, and that's a big step towards a better and safer district.”
The work for the square and adjacent streets – Rue Vlogaert, Rue Fontainas and Rue César Depaepe – is the first implementation of the Sustainable Neighbourhood Contract Midi, which is intended to improve the liveability, safety and environment of public space.

New benches and picnic tables will be installed, trees will be planted and there will be more opportunities for games and sports. Part of Rue Vlogaert will be closed to traffic.
The municipality will now select a contractor and work will start in early 2026. In the next phase, Rue Claes and Rue Feron will be revamped.
“In the built-up and densely populated Midi district, quality open space is essential for the well-being and quality of life of residents,” said Saint-Gilles city councillor Willem Stevens, of Vooruit.
“Square Jacques Franck has a lot of potential but also a lot of problems and limitations. With a few targeted improvements that we drew up with local residents and with young people and children, Square Jacques Franck can once again become a pleasant place for everyone.”
One person was shot dead at the square in February 2024, the day after shots were fired into the air nearby. The perpetrators of the first incident hit bystanders with their vehicle while fleeing the scene.
The shootings are believed to be related to the drugs trade in the city, along with multiple shootings close to Clemenceau metro station in neighbouring Anderlecht.
