Ryanair CEO wants to limit passengers to two glasses of alcohol in airports
Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has called for stricter limits on alcohol consumption in airports, suggesting that passengers should be restricted to no more than two glasses of alcohol before boarding a flight.
In an interview with the BBC on Wednesday, O'Leary expressed concern over the increasing number of incidents involving violent passengers who have consumed alcohol, often in combination with other substances.
"We don't allow people to get behind the wheel while drunk, but we still allow them to board a plane while drunk," O'Leary said. He said that the consequences of such behaviour are felt not only by the crew but also by fellow passengers.
"In the past, people who drank too much would have simply fallen over and fallen asleep. But today, those same people have also taken pills and powder. Because of that mix, you get much more aggressive behaviour, which is difficult to control."
O'Leary acknowledged the challenges airlines face in identifying intoxicated passengers at the gate, especially when they are part of a group. "As long as they can stand up and shuffle, they get on board. And then once the plane has taken off, we are confronted with their misbehaviour," he said.
Ryanair has already implemented measures on flights to Ibiza, a popular party destination, where staff search passengers' hand luggage for alcohol before they board.
