A suspect was arrested on Friday in the investigation into the murder of the 61-year-old wife of an American top executive of global tyre manufacturer Goodyear in Brussels. The suspect is the Goodyear top executive's private secretary, Het Nieuwsblad reported.
The wife of Goodyear’s top executive was killed in a robbery at her flat in the Brussels municipality of Sint-Pieters-Woluwe on 17 March. The American woman, Carmel D., arrived at her flat in the Roger Vandendriesschelaan in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe at around 8 pm that day. At the door, an unknown man wearing a face mask was waiting and presumably threatened her to get into the flat.
Once inside, he allegedly stabbed the victim and then fled with various expensive watches, worth several tens of thousands of euros, and jewellery. Her husband, who came home later, found her and notified the emergency services, but they could only confirm the death. The husband is the top executive for the Middle East, Africa and Europe regions of Goodyear Europe. The couple had been living in Brussels for several years.
The Brussels prosecutor's office opened a judicial inquiry for manslaughter. As part of that inquiry, investigators on Friday morning raided the home of the Goodyear top executive's private secretary in Steenokkerzeel, Flemish Brabant province. The woman was deprived of her freedom and is due to be brought before the investigating judge on Saturday.
