Serge Pauwels succeeds Sven Vanthourenhout as coach of Belgian cycling team
Serge Pauwels will succeed Sven Vanthourenhout as Belgian national road cycling coach. Belgian Cycling announced the news on Wednesday evening after the board meeting at the federation's headquarters in Tubize.
Pauwels, 40, has been with Belgian Cycling since the beginning of 2021, having ended his career as a professional cyclist. He started as a development coach before becoming the national coach for the male junior road cyclists. He assisted Vanthourenhout at several international championships.
"I get to work with one of the strongest generations we have ever seen," Pauwels said on Wednesday. "After Remco [Evenepoel], Wout [Van Aert] and Lotte [Kopecky], there are still a lot of potential talents in the waiting room and I want to continue to do my best for them."
Belgium bids farewell to Sven Vanthourenhout, who was appointed Belgian national cycling coach in 2020, combining cyclo-cross and road cycling. Under his reign, Belgium won no less than 99 medals in international competitions, including three rainbow jerseys and 5 Olympic medals.
