Shooting in Anderlecht leaves one person dead
A shooting in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht on Sunday night left one person dead and another injured. The exact circumstances of the shooting are still unclear, according to the Brussels public prosecutor's office.
"The police zone of Brussels-South received a call about a shooting in the Aumale area at about 20.50," said spokesperson Yasmina Vanoverschelde.
"There is one dead victim, a man. Another victim was injured. The Brussels prosecutor's office has been informed. In the interest of the investigation, we cannot comment further for the time being."
Heavy weaponry
The shooting is said to have taken place in a café on Rue de Sébastopol, near Aumale metro station. Bystanders tried to revive the victim but he died of his wounds.
The assailant, who is believed to have used a heavy weapon, possibly an automatic rifle, fled the scene. Heavily armed police patrols searched the area, supported by a federal police helicopter. It is unclear whether any suspects have been apprehended.
The area around Aumale station has been plagued by drug violence. In October, there were four shootings in 10 days.
