SNCB and Infrabel to map causes of train delays more accurately to improve punctuality

Trains in Belgium achieved a punctuality rate of 92.3 per cent in August, the best performance since January 2022. That punctuality should improve further by mapping delays in more detail.

Rail network operator Infrabel and railway company SNCB are going to track and publish the causes of delays on the tracks more accurately. For every train that falls 1.5 minutes behind schedule, the reasons will be examined. Charting such minor delays should help improve punctuality over time.

Trains may be slightly delayed because a signal is turned green too late, for example, or because there are a lot of passengers on the platform trying to board or disembark, delaying the departure from the station.

“Every minute counts for punctuality,” SNCB spokesperson Dimitri Temmerman said. “These may be minor delays, but they can have a snowball effect on the tracks.”

The railway companies have been making these analyses internally for some time, but the figures will now be made public. They will also be included in the punctuality figures that Infrabel publishes monthly on its open data website.
