Belgium's Soudal acquires majority stake in Japanese adhesive producer
Belgian silicone producer Soudal has acquired a majority stake in Sharp Chemical, a Japanese manufacturer of industrial adhesives, the Turnhout-based company announced.
Soudal is Europe's largest independent producer of sealants and adhesives and is active worldwide. Last year it acquired Durante Adesivi, an Italian manufacturer of industrial adhesives. At the time, Soudal said it was aiming for group sales of 1.5 billion euros in 2024.
It will achieve this goal thanks to its majority stake in Sharp Chemical, the company said on Thursday. Sharp was founded in 1960 by the Japanese families Murakami and Miyata. It is based in Osaka, but also has a manufacturing centre in Shanghai, China.
"The acquisition fills one of our major blind spots on the world map," said founder Vic Swerts. "Sharp Chemical provides an excellent platform for our further growth in Japan." The Sharp Chemical brand will continue to exist.
Soudal employs more than 4,000 people and had a turnover of 1.34 billion euros in 2023. With the acquisition of Sharp Chemical, Soudal now has 31 production facilities worldwide.
