Strike to cause major disruption to Brussels public transport on Tuesday

The Brussels public transport company STIB-MIVB is expecting major disruption to its metro, tram and bus network on Tuesday as a result of strikes against measures taken by the Belgian federal government.

The exact extent of the strike cannot yet be estimated, but on Thursday the STIB-MIVB advised its passengers to make alternative travel arrangements in Brussels on Tuesday.

Throughout the day, passengers will be kept informed of disruptions via the STIB-MIVB's website and app, screens at stations and social media. The public transport company advised passengers to use taxis, shared bikes, scooters or cars via the mobility app Floya.

The strike is being organised by the ABVV and ACV unions in protest at several socio-economic measures taken by the federal government. The unions have been organising strikes for several months against pension cuts, the erosion of the civil service statute and cuts at the expense of the unemployed and the long-term sick.

On 29 April, the unions will focus on regional strikes in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and several cities in Wallonia. Public transport in Flanders and the national railways are also expected to be affected.
