Suspect involved in 2023 Brussels terror attack arrested in Malaga

A suspect involved in the terrorist attack in Brussels on 16 October 2023, in which two Swedish football fans were killed, has been arrested at Malaga airport. The man is believed to have supplied the weapon used by the attacker.

On 16 October 2023, shortly after 19.00, Tunisian national Abdesalem Lassoued opened fire on a taxi near Place Sainctelette in Brussels, killing two Swedish football fans.

The fans were in Brussels to support their national team in a match against Belgium. A third passenger, a Swedish man in his 70s, was seriously injured in the vehicle. Lassoued was shot dead by police the following day in a café in Schaerbeek.

Wanted for terrorism, murder and assault

The suspect believed to have supplied the attacker's firearm was arrested at Malaga airport in Spain on Friday as he prepared to board a flight out of the country. He was wanted by Belgian authorities for terrorism, murder and assault and faces life imprisonment.

The suspect's extradition has been requested so that he can be questioned by a Belgian investigating judge

The Belgian Federal prosecutor's office confirmed that the individual had been arrested in connection with the 2023 attack. A Belgian investigating judge had issued a European arrest warrant for him.

The suspect's extradition has been requested so that he can be questioned by a Belgian investigating judge. No further information will be released at this time, said the prosecutor's office.
