Three Ukrainian soldiers admitted to Queen Astrid Military Hospital with burns
Three Ukrainian soldiers suffering from severe burns were admitted to the burns centre at the Queen Astrid Military Hospital in Neder-Over-Heembeek on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Defence press service. Their care is part of a B-FAST operation, a federal government initiative activated for emergency aid abroad.
Norway arranged for the transportation of the wounded soldiers. Upon arrival, they received comprehensive care in the hospital's burns unit. "As part of its support for Ukraine, Belgium, through the Queen Astrid Military Hospital and its facilities, is providing care units to treat wounded Ukrainians," said defence minister Ludivine Dedonder.
Dedonder connected this support to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, stating, "While we commemorate the 80th anniversary of Belgium's liberation this week, a democratic European country is currently fighting to prevent a repressive and authoritarian regime from imposing its will. Since the beginning of this conflict, Belgium and Defence have supported the Ukrainians. We will continue this democratic solidarity."
For security reasons and to respect medical confidentiality, Defence will not release any further details about the patients.
