Belgian Tom Saintfiet appointed head coach of Mali national football team
Belgian Tom Saintfiet has been appointed head coach of the national football team of Mali, the country's football federation announced on Wednesday evening.
This will be Saintfiet's seventh assignment in Africa, following previous stints as coach of Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Malawi, Togo and Gambia.
In 2021, the 51-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup with Gambia. He stepped down after early elimination at the Africa Cup this year and became coach of the Philippines.
Mali are fourth in their qualification group for the 2026 World Cup. They will play their first two qualifying games for the 2025 Africa Cup on 6 and 10 September, against Mozambique and Eswatini. Interim national coach Alou Badra Diallo will be in charge for those two matches.
