TotalEnergies will invest 50 million euros in energy storage in Belgium
TotalEnergies will invest 50 million euros in energy storage in Belgium. After commissioning a battery park near its refinery in Antwerp, the French energy group will build a second one in Feluy, De Tijd reports.
Last year, TotalEnergies began construction on a 25-megawatt battery park next to the oil refinery in Antwerp, the group's largest in Europe. With a storage capacity of 75 megawatt hours, it can store enough electricity to supply 10,000 families for a day.
The group's next undertaking is a similar battery park near its petrochemical complex in Feluy, Wallonia. These two projects represent an investment of 50 million euros from TotalEnergies, which predicts project completion by the end of next year. They also put the company on the map as one of the larger players in the Belgian energy storage market.
Other established energy companies such as Engie, Eneco, Luminus and Storm have also announced ambitions to build large battery parks in Belgium.
With the acquisition of Lampiris, TotalEnergies has become the fourth-largest electricity supplier in Flanders. The group has a gas-fired power station in Marchienne-au-Pont (430 megawatts) and is a regular buyer of electricity from the Rentel offshore wind farm (309 megawatts). It is also a major player in the electric charging market as the operator of 10,000 charging points, thanks in part to winning a major Flemish contract.
