Tour de France: Philipsen takes second stage win in 13th stage, Van Aert is second again
Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) outpaced the opposition on Friday in the 13th stage of the 111th Tour de France. After a flat course of more than 165 kilometres between Agen and Pau, Philipsen was the fastest of a considerably thinned peloton in the sprint, ahead of Wout van Aert (Visma | Lease a bike) and the German Pascal Ackermann (Israel-Premier Tech).
Green jersey Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) finished fourth, Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) sixth. The final was marred by a crash, in which Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny) was held up.
In the general classification, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) retains the yellow jersey, 1:06 ahead of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and 1:14 ahead of the Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike).
Van Aert was disappointed with ending up in second place for a second time. "I was well placed," he told the Sporza camera afterwards. "We had already lost some serious strength and we accelerated from behind. I saw Jasper coming from the corner of my eye, but I could no longer receive his sprint."
“I'm disappointed,” he continued. "I felt very good, it was really there. We drove for it. It's a shame that I let it pass. It could have been a hit, but everything has to be right."
The race will continue in the Pyrenees on Saturday. The run-up to the fourteenth stage of just under 152 kilometers between Pau and Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d'Adet is flat. In the second part of the stage, the Col du Tourmalet (outside cat.) and the Hourquette d'Ancizan (2nd cat.) await, before climbing to the finish on the Pla d'Adet (outside cat.).
