Train drivers plan series of strikes

The train drivers’ union ASTB has announced significant strike plans for the coming months. They intend to strike for six days in April and for two weeks a month from May, the union announced on Facebook.
The union said in its post that “politicians remain deaf” to the railway unions, despite the various strikes that have taken place in recent weeks. “Enough ignoring us, it’s time for action!” it said.
Drivers plan to strike for six consecutive days in April. From May, there would be two weeks of strikes every month, and in July and August they would take place every Friday and Saturday.
ASTB and the OVS union took part in a nine-day strike in February. On Monday the largest unions, ACOD Spoor and ACV-Transcom, went on strike. They are protesting against the federal government’s planned cost-cutting measures and changes to the retirement age.
A further seven-day strike will begin on Sunday, an initiative of the small union Metisp-Protect. This will be immediately followed by a new strike by ACOD Spoor and ACV-Transcom on 31 March, as part of a national day of action.
