Two Belgian restaurants included in European top 50
Two Belgian restaurants have been included in a recent listing of top restaurants in Europe: "L’Air du Temps" and "The Jane".
L’Air du Temps, run by Korean-born chef Sang-Hoon Degeimbre and located in Liernu/Eghezée in the province of Namur, was included in a ranking by Opinionated About Dining (OAD).
The restaurant, serving French-Asian cuisine inspired by global cuisine, came in in 40th place in the OAD ranking, which relies on the experience and opinions from “diners who are passionate about where they eat,” and is based on various factors, from price-quality ration to the type of diners it attracts.
Degeimbre’s establishment also holds two Michelin stars and is a member of Les Grandes Tables du Monde.
Another Belgian restaurant with two Michelin stars, The Jane in Antwerp, ranked in second-to-last place (49).
The establishment, located in the former chapel of the Military Hospital on the Paradeplein, first opened its doors in 2014 and serves accessible gastronomic cuisine that focuses on delivering “powerful flavours” in a simple way.
Cheap eats, Classics and Casual
Aside from publishing the top 50 restaurant list, OAD also published three other lists of European restaurants based on their general atmosphere and the clientele they attract, all including Belgian restaurants.
Sergio Herman’s “frietjes” concept at Frites Atelierin Antwerp was included in the “Cheap Eats” list, ranking 47th. The eatery also has locations in Belgium and in the Netherlands, and serves Belgian fries with unusual toppings, from Arabic-themed baba ganoush-topped fried potatoes to basil-flavoured chips.
The highest ranking Belgian restaurant can be found in the “Classical” list. The three-star restaurant Hof Van Cleve, run by Peter Goossens, was awarded 16th place in the ranking. The restaurant also ranked in 36th place in the most recent World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Finally, 21st place in the “Casual” list went to Bistrot Du Nord in Antwerp, run by chef Michaël Rewers. The eatery has one Michelin star, and is famed for preparing meat dishes in a unique yet homely manner.
The three top-rated restaurants are located in Sweden, Denmark and Spain.
