UGent and KU Leuven listed among world's top 100 universities
UGent and KU Leuven are among the world’s top 100 universities according to the annual Shanghai rankings.
UGent is in 83rd place, with KU Leuven in 85th. Last year, Ghent was in 74th place while Leuven has moved up from 95th. The Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is ranked between 101 and 150.
For the 22nd year running, Harvard tops the list, with seven other US institutions in the top 10 alongside Oxford and Cambridge. Université Paris-Saclay is the highest-ranked non-anglophone university, in 15th place.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities is compiled each year by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, an independent organisation focusing on higher education. It assesses more than 2,500 research institutions to compile its list.
With a focus on research rather than teaching, the criteria include the number of Nobel laureates a university has, the number of scientists most cited in their discipline and the number of publications in the journals Science and Nature.
