Vincent Kompany close to leaving Burnley for Bayern Munich
Belgium’s Vincent Kompany is close to becoming the new manager of Bayern Munich, various German and English media report. Kompany, whose Burnley team were relegated to the English second tier in May after one season in the Premier League, is said to be on the verge of replacing Thomas Tuchel at Bayern.
According to German daily Bild and TV channel Sky, Bayern have reached an agreement in principle with Brussels-born Kompany to become their next coach. The club must now agree terms with Burnley, where the former Belgium defender still has four years left on his contract.
Munich failed to win the Bundesliga title this season for the first time since 2013, finishing third behind Bayer Leverkusen and Vfb Stuttgart. They decided at the end of February to part company with manager Tuchel. Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick have already rejected the position.
Kompany, 38, moved to Hamburg as a player in 2006 before joining Manchester City two years later, where he remained for more than 10 years. He began his managerial career at Anderlecht in the summer of 2019.
He returned to England as Burnley manager in 2022 and won the Championship title in his first season with 101 points, taking the club to the Premier League. They finished last season second from bottom of the league with 24 points.
