Visitor numbers to Flemish museums continue to rise

The number of visits to museums subsidised by the Flemish government continues to rise, according to figures published on Friday by Statistics Flanders. In 2023, Flemish museums attracted 4.8 million visitors.
This figure is significantly higher than in the previous year. In 2022, there were around 3.9 million visitors. Since 2021, the numbers have been on an upward trend, partly due to the sharp drop in museum visits during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when Flemish museums were temporarily closed due to hygiene measures. In 2021, visitor numbers remained lower due to restrictions on the number of visitors and a ban on group visits.
In 2023, national museums accounted for 58 per cent of all visits, attracting over 2.8 million visitors. Regional museums received 12 per cent of visitors, while cultural heritage institutions accounted for 29 per cent.
In particular, the number of visitors to cultural heritage institutions increased significantly in 2023, from 351,953 to 1,418,485 - a fourfold increase. According to Statistics Flanders, this increase was partly due to the reclassification of the Bruges Municipal Museums from national museums to cultural heritage institutions.
