Wout van Aert wins red jersey after second stage of Vuelta a Spaña

Wout van Aert won the red leader's jersey for the first time in his career at the end of the second stage of the Vuelta a España on Sunday, finishing second in a mass sprint.

"Of course, I wanted to win the stage, but all in all, this is a good day. The team did a very good job to make it a mass sprint," Van Aert told the press. "So it's a shame to finish second, even though I knew that top three meant I would take red."

The victory for Australia's Kaden Groves did not surprise Van Aert: "I knew for a while that he is super fast. So I had him in my sights for this sprint. Kaden passed me very quickly. He deserved this victory."

There will be a new opportunity for the sprinters on Monday during the last of three stages in Portugal. "Hopefully, another chance for me," Van Aert said. "The legs are good, and we are here to keep trying again and again."
