Trump: ‘Zelensky wants to make deal to end war’
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky wants to make a deal to end his country's war with Russia, US president-elect Donald Trump said on his social network Truth Social on Sunday. Trump and Zelensky met shortly before the reopening of Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral on Saturday.
"Zelensky and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness," Trump wrote after his meeting with Zelensky. His visit to the restored cathedral, which was badly damaged by fire in 2019, was his first international visit since winning the US presidential election in early November. On 20 January, he will be sworn in as president.
"There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin,” he said. “Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse."
“President Trump is, as always, resolute. I thank him,” Zelensky wrote on X after the meeting. He thanked French president Emmanuel Macron for organising the meeting. According to Zelensky, he, Trump and Macron agreed to continue working together. “We all want this war to end as soon as possible and in a just way,” he said.
Trump also hinted that the US will not interfere in Syria. “This is not our fight. Let it play out. Do not get involved!” he wrote.
